Multimodal freights

Multimodal transportation is a method of organizing logistics, in which the same cargo is transported using two or more modes of transport (for example, road transport, rail and sea transport) without reloading the cargo itself. The main transport units in such transportation are containers and trailers. This approach can improve transport efficiency. Rail is used for the main haul.

Standardized loading units in multimodal transport

By standardizing containers as cargo units globally, attention to this questions makes the entire multimodal transport chain more efficient. An example is the practice of a shipping company loading a container at a transhipment terminal, after which the container is placed on a train and delivered to the recipient.

Combined transport

Combined transport is a subset of multimodal transport. It also involves the use of two or more modes of transport in the logistics chain. However, the focus in this area is on rail transport. The preliminary and subsequent stages of transport are carried out by road transport and should be kept to a minimum.

Combined transport keeps the road leg short. Rail is used for the main haul; road is used for first and last mile.
